Adalaj Stepwell, a magnificent structure built brilliantly to curb water crisis in and around Adalaj Village. The Adalaj Stepwell was built in 1498 and is one of the many step wells built in India to provide access to groundwater. The entire architecture is an excellent illustration of the intelligence of the engineers and architects India had even at that time. It was built during the reign of Queen Rudabai, a muslim ruler. Though now dry, the well once provided water to weary travellers and pilgrims along the roads outside of Ahmedabad. The four-level well is dug directly into the water table, exposing fresh water that rose and fell according to the seasons and the amount of rainfall. Its deep interior provided cool relief from the harsh sun.
Rani Ki Vav or 'Queen's Stepwell' a 900-year-old structure listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a distinctive form of water storage system located in Patan, on the banks of River Saraswati. The well was excavated in the 1960s in a well-protected state as it was buried under slit for sanctuaries. In addition to this, Rani Ka Vav was an important centre for socializing among the locals as well as taking refuge from the heat. It's an excellent example of turning something functional into a piece of art. Its construction is attributed to Udayamati, daughter of Khengara of Saurashtra, queen of the 11th-century Chaulukya dynasty and spouse of Bhima I.
